Language: English, Mandarin, (English subtitles)
Completion Date: 2025
About:
One Day At A Time (一天过一天) is an intimate profile feature story documentary about Koh Chun Lian, a 72-year-old Singaporean working-class mother. For over five decades, she endured immense hardship, working multiple jobs to raise her two daughters and secure a better future; a testament to the sacrifices of Singapore's founding generation.
Sacrificing her education at age 13 to work as a housemaid in Singapore, Chun Lian's life became a relentless cycle of hard work, often juggling a 9-to-5 job with night shifts at McDonald's and cleaning. Driven by the singular purpose, "I don't want my children to suffer," she endured immense physical toll, forging a better future through sheer will. Her story demonstrates that change happens "generation by generation," culminating in a moment of heartfelt gratitude for the lifelong opportunity she created.
Creative Problem:
As part of a university course (Media Production and Presentation), we were tasked to create a profile driven documentary that featured one of the first million Singaporeans for the National Heritage Board, founder's memorial project.
Solution:
Our group decided to document Koh Chun Lian's story of resilience. We took a stripped down approach and decided against the use of background music. We also employed the use of a long take for the climax of the film.
