About the project

Project Type: Instagram Photo story

Role: Photojournalist

Language: English

Completion Date: 2025

About:

Jania Ang, 21, is a national sailor who has been sailing for more than half her life. In December 2025, she'll be representing Singapore in the South East Asian Games. We go behind the scenes to uncover the amount of time, dedication, and sacrifice it takes to perform as an athlete at such a high level in Singapore.

By shooting on the Fujifilm X-Half's film mode and being limited to only 36 shots, it mimics Jania’s own intentionality and discipline towards the way she lives and trains.

Creative Problem:

We were tasked to create an Instagram photostory with a  psuedo film camera. The limitation was to shoot on only 1 'roll of film' which was only 36 shots. This project was part of an Advanced Photojournalism module, in collaboration with Fujifilm.

In pairs, we were also tasked to create a behind the scenes video of the process of how it went.

Solution:

In order to make the most of my 36 shots, I interviewed, scripted and planned my entire story before I started.

Process & Development

As someone with no experience shooting on film before, I was out of my depth when we were only limited to 36 shots. In order to combat this, I decided to conduct my interview before shooting my profile. I had to script my entire story very tightly before even going on set.

Screen grab of my 'AV script'/shot list.

I wrote out my proposed visuals on the left column and the intention, possible quotes and  captions on the right column.

For each day, I also made sure to budget the number of shots I could dedicate to each segment of the story.

While this was a highly experimental way to tell stories, through this project I've learnt how to be more intentional with what and how I shoot.
