About the project

Project Type: Photo story

Role: Photojournalist

Language: English

Completion Date: 2025

About:

People complain that Gen Zs are chronically online. However, it is because of this unique trait that long-distance relationships can not only survive, but thrive, becoming more and more common today. For Hazirah (23, Singapore) and Ronan (25, Jakarta), their relationship started and still continues online to this day. Though they are 900 km apart and their plans to relocate are not yet fully concrete, they remain as committed as any other in-person couple, with the help of modern-day technology.

Chronically Online, Deeply In Love, is a photojournalistic story, inspired by projection photographers like John Clang and Karman Verdi, about how Gen Zs use technology to bridge the physical distance in modern Long Distance Relationships.

Creative Problem:

As part of our Advanced Photojournalism Module, as a class of 13 journalists and photojournalists, we were tasked to put together a Zine. â€‹

Solution:

As part of the process, in pairs, we had to pitch story angles, source for profiles, do research, conduct interviews, conceptualise, shoot and write a story for the zine.

Process & Development

Through a lot of trial and error, research and conceptualisation, we found a way to capture an inherently non-visual topic, like Long Distance Relationships, and make it visual.

The process was so long and complicated, and difficult to explain in words, please take a look at the mood board instead. If you would like to understand the technical aspects of how we achieved this image, please reach out, I would love to chat! (It involved a lot of experimentation, scale and proportion.)
